KALINKA Leather Knapsack 19 L: A Drawstring Pack That Ages Into Yours
Half past eight on a Saturday, the market is folding its trestles away, and you are holding a loaf of bread, a jumper you took off two streets ago and the notebook you never emptied out. You pull the cord, the leather gathers into a throat, the flap drops, two buckle tongues go through their rollers. The KALINKA leather knapsack takes all of it without asking you to fold your day into a rectangle first.
That is the argument for a knapsack cut this old way. A zip runs in a straight line and everything you own has to pass under it, while a drawstring opens the whole mouth of the bag, so a bulky jumper goes in the way a bulky jumper actually is. You pay for that in seconds, never in room: 19 L of full grain hide across 40 x 30 x 16 cm, a day of city life or one night away.

What You Are Actually Paying For
A leather knapsack is an easy object to fake: split hide sprayed to look like grain, and stitching that holds until the first heavy Monday. The KALINKA is built the other way round, and this is where the money goes.
- ✔️ Full grain cow leather, oil immersed: the top layer of the hide, the one that takes a patina. It marks early, then the marks settle in and stop being marks.
- ✔️ Drawstring throat under a strapped flap: the mouth opens as wide as the bag, so an awkward load goes in whole.
- ✔️ Antiqued brass roller buckles: two on the flap, two more on the front pocket. The roller turns as you pull, so the strap wears along its length.
- ✔️ Cross stitched strap anchors: an X of ecru thread at every anchor. That joint is what fails first on a cheap bag, and it is the one we over-build.
- ✔️ 19 L kept in order: one main compartment, a zip pocket, slot pockets and a smartphone pocket, so the small things stop living at the bottom.
- ✔️ Covered for 2 years: the same warranty as every bag we make, with 30 days to send it back if it is not the bag you pictured.
None of that photographs well, which is the frustrating part of selling leather online. What you can see is the colour: Brown reads warm and cognac in daylight, Coffee is the darker, quieter one, and both are the same hide taken to a different depth. Carry either through one winter and the flap softens along its fold, the straps take the line of your shoulders, and the cord end darkens where your fingers close on it every morning.
Who This Knapsack Is For
Everyone who ends up with a KALINKA is buying the same thing: a bag that will look better in five years than it does in the photograph. The rest is a question of how you spend your days.
- You want the real hide: you have owned the coated kind, you watched it flake at the corners, and you would rather pay once.
- You carry a day: 19 L holds an everyday load, plus the jumper and the lunch that never fit in a slim bag. If you travel longer than that, the WATERLOO leather travel backpack is the larger cut of the same idea.
- You move on foot and by train: markets, studios, and the walk between them. Flat ground, short distances, a bag that reads as yours.
- You like an object that is openly old-fashioned: the flap, the cord, the brass. It looks like a trapper's pack because it is cut like one.
- You are buying for a man or a woman: the KALINKA is unisex, and the drawstring closes as neatly over a half load as over a full one.
One caveat: the back panel is a solid sheet of leather with nothing behind it to breathe, and the bag weighs 1.7 kg empty, so it belongs on pavement rather than on a long climb, where one of our canvas backpacks carries the same volume for far less. If what you pictured was this one, in Brown or in Coffee, the cord knotted and the flap creased where you fold it back every morning, then this is the bag. Pull the cord, thread the buckles, go.

Note: full grain leather is a natural material, and small traces, veins or marks are part of it. Light scratches come out by rubbing them with a cloth soaked in vegetable oil. The colour of the leather varies slightly from batch to batch.
Oil immersed leather can transfer colour onto light fabrics. Let the bag dry if it gets wet, keep it away from pale clothing while it is damp, and any mark it leaves will come out in the wash.
Frequently Asked Questions
19 L behind the drawstring opening, across 40 x 30 x 16 cm: one main space kept in order by slit and zip pockets, plus a dedicated smartphone pocket. It takes bulky shapes better than a zipped pack of the same volume. If your days regularly ask for more room, the WATERLOO leather travel backpack is the roomier cut of the same trapper spirit.
With a drawstring, then a flap held by two leather straps and antiqued brass roller buckles. There is no zip on the front of this bag. The large front pocket closes the same way, under its own flap with two more straps and buckles. It is slower than a zip and it is meant to be: the cord lets you close over a load that would never sit flat.
Both. The KALINKA is a unisex leather knapsack: the same cut suits men and women, teenagers and adults. The shoulder straps are padded, run wide and adjust at the base, so the bag rides high or low depending on where you buckle them.
Up to a point, and we will not oversell it. The hide is water resistant: oil immersed full grain sheds a shower and dries without staining. But a drawstring bag is never sealed, and the point where the cord leaves the leather lets water in during sustained rain. Let it dry away from direct heat, and keep damp leather off pale fabric.
It gets better. The full grain develops a patina where your hands and shoulders work it: the grain softens, the colour deepens, and the fold of the flap sets. After a few years no two Kalinkas look alike.
The KALINKA gives you one 19 L compartment measuring 40 x 30 x 16 cm, with slot pockets, a zip pocket and a smartphone pocket for the small things. Notebooks, files, a lunch and a jumper travel well in it. If you carry a computer every day, write to us with the model before you order and we will measure it against the bag.
Anyone who needs a trail harness. The shoulder straps are padded, but the back panel is a solid sheet of leather with no ventilation behind it, and the bag is 1.7 kg empty, so a long climb under load is better served by a pack such as the Topo Designs Rover Pack Classic. The KALINKA is made to carry your daily life in full grain leather and to age with it.
Rub light scratches with a cloth soaked in vegetable oil and they melt back into the grain. Let the bag dry away from direct heat if it gets wet, and keep the buckle straps supple by using them rather than leaving them tight. Like every bag we make, the KALINKA is covered by our 2 year warranty.
