Topo Designs · Mountain Cross Bag 14L
A 14-litre crossbody bag: the laptop in its own compartment, the suitcase underneath.
The Mountain Cross Bag is a 14-litre Topo Designs crossbody laptop bag in recycled nylon ripstop, reinforced with 1000D nylon at the bottom. During the week, your 14-inch laptop travels in its padded compartment and the strap goes across your body. On Friday evening, you slide its back panel over your suitcase handle and head for the train, a water bottle in each side pocket.

The padded laptop compartment sits at the back of the bag, with a zip of its own: you take the 14-inch out without opening the main compartment.

In the rain
On a wet day, the laptop is better off in a case.
Not made for rain
Recycled nylon fabric
In steady rain, water eventually gets through: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.

Water-resistant
Water-resistant fabric
The water-resistant fabric copes with a shower; in steady rain, water eventually gets through.
Water-repellent
PFC-free water-repellent finish
A PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) finish makes water bead up on the fabric. It doesn't make the bag waterproof: in steady rain, water eventually gets through.
Before heading out into steady rain, slip the laptop into a case.
Topo Designs
A sewing machine in a Fort Collins basement, in 2008.
Jedd Rose buys a sewing machine and sews the first bags in his basement in Fort Collins, Colorado; Mark Hansen asks around for people who can make them.
The two founders wanted gear like the kit they grew up with: tough, practical, classic, the opposite of throwaway and overcomplicated. The same bag goes from the city to the trail.
Topo Designs guarantees its bags against defects in materials and workmanship for a reasonable lifetime, excluding normal wear, accidents and lack of care, and would rather repair than replace. For a bag bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- A separate 14-inch compartment, two bottle holders, a shoulder strap and a luggage pass-through: the office bag that also catches the Friday train.
- Worth knowing
- The compartment takes a 14-inch laptop at most: with a 15-inch, go for the Global Briefcase.
- Who it's for
- Anyone who'd rather carry a shoulder bag than a backpack to the office, and often goes away for the weekend with a wheeled suitcase.
