Deuter · Updays 26

Skis on your back, a ridge on foot: 26 litres for fast ascents.

On the ridge, the skis go across the pack in a few moves: the tails in a loop, the tips held by an elastic cord hooked to the shoulder strap. Light, the Updays 26 sits close to your body and keeps skins and ski crampons in a bottom compartment you open without taking the pack off.

Ski touring · Fast ascents · Day trips

Climb fast, just the essentials on your back.

Skiers bootpack up a steep slope, skis strapped diagonally on their packs; in the lead, two Updays packs

Deuter

Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.

Since 1898

Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.

The mesh back

In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.

Guaranteed, then repaired

Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Eiken's take

Why we chose it
For 710 g, it keeps what matters on a fast ascent: the shovel in a reinforced compartment, skis strapped on in a few moves, skins out without putting the pack down.
Worth knowing
Designed for 4 to 8 kg: for a day with a rope, two ice axes and snowshoes, the Freescape Lite 26 (1,000 g) carries more.
Who it's for
Ski tourers who count grams and vertical metres, and head out for the day with only the bare essentials.

Baptiste, Eiken

Questions

Updays 26 or Updays 24 SL?

Same construction: Lite back, quick ski attachment, avalanche safety compartment, bottom compartment. The 24 SL is smaller (47 × 29 × 21 cm versus 51 × 31 × 23), weighs 680 g and is made for a 38 to 48 cm back (height 158 to 178 cm), with a harness shaped for a woman's body; the 26 covers a 38 to 54 cm back (158 to 195 cm).

What are the dimensions and weight of the Updays 26?

51 × 31 × 23 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 710 g empty, for 26 litres. Recommended load: 4 to 8 kg.

How do you attach skis to the Updays 26?

Diagonally: the ski tails go into a sliding loop at the bottom of the pack; an elastic cord goes round the tips and clips to a hook on the shoulder strap. The attachment adjusts, and comes off when you don't need it.

Updays 26 or Freescape Lite 26?

The Updays weighs 710 g and sticks to the essentials for climbing fast: skis diagonally, shovel, one ice axe, helmet. The Freescape Lite 26 weighs 1,000 g and carries more outside: rope, two ice axes, snowshoes, skis diagonally or on the side, with a LiteSnow back panel and a hip belt that carries gear.

Is the Updays 26 waterproof?

No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
