Deuter · Futura Pro 38 SL
Hut to hut, in the SL fit: 38 litres for several days.
Last night's hut is down at the bottom of the valley, tonight's is still a long way up. The Futura Pro 38 SL is the biggest Futura Pro in the SL fit: a shorter harness, shaped for a woman's body, and enough room for the sleeping bag and several days' gear. The load drops onto your hips, and air gets to your back.

Big days too, but its 38 litres are made for going further.

Several days in the SL fit: the biggest of the three, for stages between huts.
Not its terrain
- Alpine mountaineering1 out of 5Poles or an ice axe on one side; for climbing, it's still too bulky.
- Travel1 out of 5Loaded from the top, it's a trail pack through and through.

What fits inside
38L
The night at the bottom, the day on top.
The sleeping bag goes in through the bottom zip and waits for the evening in its compartment, away from the day's gear. Above it, the big opening under the lid cinches with a drawcord, and there's room for a hydration reservoir up to 3 L.
- The light sleeping bag, in the bottom compartment
- Clothes and food for several days, under the lid
- Yesterday's wet clothes, kept apart in their pocket

The back system
Several days of carrying, on a shorter back.
- The meshFlexible and airy, it holds the pack away from your back and follows a slimmer figure, from the top down to the small of the back.
- The adjustmentVariClick at the centre of the pack, five positions from S to L; the load lifters have two positions for fine-tuning.
- The frameThe shoulder straps come straight off the steel frame, which sends the load to the padded hip fins.
The right fit
SL fit, designed for a woman's build. Recommended for heights of 158 to 178 cm. Also available in the standard fit. See the Futura Pro 40
Within reach
What you need during the day stays on the outside.

In the rain
Several days out means a downpour at some point: the cover is there.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
Water gets in eventually: anything that hates water goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads on the fabric, but gets through the seams and zips in steady rain.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
A cover supplied with the pack wraps all of it when the downpour sets in.
This bag
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
Once closed, the pack keeps its contents safe from rain and splashes (IPX4), not from immersion.
Without its cover, it won't get through a day of rain: keep the cover in the pack.

Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- Several days on a shorter back, with Deuter's mesh back system: the 38 SL is the SL-fit Futura Pro for linking stages, and it weighs only 50 g more than the 30 SL.
- Worth knowing
- Rated 3 out of 5 for trekking: it handles several days between huts, not a self-supported week.
- Who it's for
- For trips of a few days, from hut to hut.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Questions
Is the Futura Pro 38 SL big enough for several days?
For several days hut to hut, yes: 38 litres on two levels, the light sleeping bag at the bottom, and a trekking rating of 3 out of 5. Its recommended load tops out at 10 kg: it's a hut pack more than a wild-camping pack.
Is the Futura Pro 38 SL waterproof?
It isn't waterproof, but its rain cover is included: in steady rain, water eventually gets in through a pack's seams and zips, hence the cover. Anything that has to stay dry also goes in a pouch.
Futura Pro 38 SL or Futura Pro 40?
Same use, two fits. The 38 SL has a shorter back and a harness shaped for a woman's body, recommended for 158 to 178 cm; the 40, in the standard fit, for 170 to 205 cm. The 40 has 2 litres and 6 cm more, for 70 g.
How many pockets, and where?
Two in the lid (one outside, one inside), two on the hip belt, a mesh pocket on the front, a large stretch side pocket that opens at the top and on the side, and an inside pocket for wet gear. On top of that come the separate bottom compartment and room for a hydration reservoir up to 3 L.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Futura Pro 38 SL?
64 × 32 × 24 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 1,550 g empty, for 38 litres. Recommended load: 6 to 10 kg; recommended height: 158 to 178 cm.
