Deuter · Ascender 7
A forest loop, poles stowed up front: 7 litres and nothing more.
On the path along the pines, nothing moves on your back: the 7 litres sit snug against your torso and leave no room for bounce. Folded poles wait in the shoulder-strap holster, and the flask comes out without you slowing down. And on days when every gram counts, the back foam stays at home.
Trail running · Short outings · Forest
Water, a jacket, poles. Nothing more.

What fits inside

7 litres: a jacket, two flasks, your keys, and that's it.

- A hydration reservoir up to 2 L, against your back
- Keys and card, in the zipped inner pocket

- The foamSlipped in behind the back panel, it comes out before a run where every gram counts: 20 g lighter.
- Keeping it tightTwo adjustable, removable sternum straps, load lifters and an elastic cord at the side pull the pack in close.
- If things go wrongA safety whistle, and the SOS label with emergency numbers and mountain distress signals.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- At 315 g, it's the pack you forget about mid-run: something to drink, a jacket, and poles that stow on your chest without breaking your stride.
- Worth knowing
- A hydration reservoir of 2 litres at most: for a full day, the Ascender 13 takes 3.
- Who it's for
- If you run for a few hours in the forest or the mountains and want your water and poles in front of you.
Baptiste, Eiken

Questions
What can you carry in the Ascender 7?
A windproof jacket, your keys and a hydration reservoir up to 2 litres, plus two soft flasks in the shoulder-strap pockets and your phone in the zipped pocket. The pack measures 44 × 23 × 12 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and weighs 315 g.
Ascender 7 or Ascender 13?
The vest, the pockets and the pole holster are the same. The 7-litre is for outings of a few hours, with a hydration reservoir up to 2 L. For 25 g more, the 13-litre also takes a warm layer and a reservoir up to 3 L; it's rated one notch higher for hiking (4 out of 5 versus 3).
Can you hike with the Ascender 7?
For a fast hike of a few hours, yes: it's rated 3 out of 5 for hiking, for a load of 1 to 3 kg. For a full day with a picnic and a warm layer, you'll soon run out of room.
Should you keep the back foam in the Ascender 7?
It's up to you. Taken out, it saves 20 g. Left in, it stays slipped between the load and your back.
Is the Ascender 7 waterproof?
No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
