Deuter · Ascender 13
340 grams, worn like a vest: 13 litres for running in the mountains.
On the descent, the load stays tight to your back: the wide shoulder straps wrap round your chest like a vest, and two sternum straps and an elastic cord pull everything in. The flasks sit up front, your phone in the zipped shoulder-strap pocket, and folded poles slide into a holster on the front of a shoulder strap, without you having to stop.
Trail running · Fast hiking · Mountains
Everything up front, nothing bouncing.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- You wear it like clothing: at 340 g you forget it's there, and the poles stowed on the shoulder strap don't break your rhythm on the climbs.
- Worth knowing
- Designed for 1 to 3 kg: load it beyond that and it doesn't run as well.
- Who it's for
- Trail runners heading out for a day in the mountains, and hikers who move fast and light.
Baptiste, Eiken

Questions
What are the dimensions and weight of the Ascender 13?
47 × 24 × 13 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 340 g, for 13 litres; 20 g less without the back foam. Recommended load: 1 to 3 kg.
Ascender 13 or Ascender 7?
Same vest, same pockets, same pole holster. The 7-litre weighs 315 g and takes a hydration reservoir up to 2 L, for an outing of a few hours; the 13-litre adds room for a jacket and a warm layer, and a reservoir up to 3 L, for the whole day.
Which hydration reservoir fits in the Ascender 13?
A reservoir of up to 3 litres, in the stretch mesh inner compartment. The shoulder-strap pockets also take two soft flasks.
How do I adjust the Ascender 13 so it doesn't move when I run?
Tighten the two sternum straps, then the elastic cord on the shoulder straps and the load lifters; the side compression straps pull the contents in when the pack isn't full.
Is the Ascender 13 waterproof?
No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
