The structure

A ribbed front, not a padded one.

Rib Cage. ABS ribs, patented according to Db, replace the thick padding on the front panel.
It holds its shape, even empty. It doesn't slump in on itself, and it protects what's inside.
Not a hard shell. The ribs take everyday knocks; a hard impact is still a hard impact.

A 16-inch laptop in its own back pocket.

Padded, the laptop pocket opens on its own side: at security, the laptop comes out without you opening the main compartment.
