Db · Hugger Backpack 25L

Hugger 25L: a 16-inch laptop in the week, trainers at the weekend.

Db's Hugger 25L is a 25-litre backpack for the office and short trips. During the week, a 16-inch laptop rides in its padded pocket against your back. On Friday, a jacket and a change of clothes join the main compartment, which opens along its full height. Half empty on Monday, it holds its shape.

What fits inside

25L

A spare pair of trainers, and everything in view at a glance.

Opened flat on the table, it shows everything, right to the bottom, and the charger stays in the lid mesh. Compact, yet big enough for a spare pair of trainers, according to Db.

The structure

A ribbed front, not a padded one.

Rib Cage. ABS ribs, patented according to Db, replace the thick padding on the front panel.
It holds its shape, even empty. It doesn't slump in on itself, and it protects what's inside.
Not a hard shell. The ribs take everyday knocks; a hard impact is still a hard impact.

Laptop

A 16-inch laptop in its own back pocket.

Padded, the laptop pocket opens on its own side: at security, the laptop comes out without you opening the main compartment.

Up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro

Stated by Db, which sizes its pockets around the MacBook Pro.

In the rain

Light rain, yes. A whole day of downpours, no.

Light rain

Coated fabric

The fabric sheds water; seams and zips let it through over time.

Shower

Coated zips

Both fabric and zips shed water. The seams, though, aren't taped.

Proper rain

Taped seams

Fabric that keeps water out, seams taped over. The zips remain the weak point.

For a whole day in the rain, use a rain cover: water eventually gets through the seams and zips.

Colours

Black and White Noise, as worn.

In the cabin

The Hugger 25L in the cabin: in the overhead locker.

Db places it in the locker above the seats. Not under the seat: it stands over 45 cm tall.

Each airline sets its own dimensions: check yours, especially on a low-cost flight.

Verdict: Db. Size limits: Eiken's calculation from the dimensions stated by Db. Each airline sets its own rules.

Eiken's take

Why we chose it: The middle of the three: it takes the 16-inch laptop the 20L turns away, and stays more compact than the 30L on the metro.
Worth knowing: 1.13 kg empty, and a fixed 25 litres: it won't expand for that one extra night.
Who it's for: Anyone who carries a 16-inch laptop every day and sometimes heads off on a Friday evening.
