A Brown Leather Backpack Cut From 2 mm of Hide

Closing the KYLO is quicker than it looks: draw the leather cord until the collar gathers, drop the flap, and the two straps snap onto the magnets set in their tips, a click you feel through the leather. The roller buckles beneath only govern how long each strap hangs. Everything under that flap sits behind 2 mm of full grain cow leather; one of the photos below puts a dial gauge on it.

The hide is immersed in oil, which is where the marbling comes from: light and dark move across each panel, and no two bags leave the workshop the same. Buckles, rivets and eyelets are antiqued brass, dulled before you ever touch them, and the stitching runs doubled where the straps take the load. Scratches are part of the deal here: the shallow ones buff away, the rest you keep.

21 Litres and a Back That Breathes

The rucksack loads from the top: 21 litres, enough for a full working day with margin for the gym or a one night bag. The laptop rides in its own padded sleeve, and the lining keeps the small things found: a zipped pocket, two open pockets, a key holder.

Note: full grain leather is a natural material, with small traces, veins or marks inherent to the hide. Scratches can be removed by lightly rubbing them with a cloth and a drop of vegetable oil. The colour of the leather might vary slightly between batches.

Oil immersed leather can transfer a little colour onto light fabrics, especially while it is new or damp. Dry the leather naturally if it gets wet and keep it off pale clothing until it has. If a mark ends up on a shirt, it washes out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KYLO made of real leather?

Yes, it is real leather: full grain cow hide, 2 mm thick, cut and assembled by hand, and one of the photos above shows the dial gauge resting on it. Full grain is the top layer of the hide, a grade above most bags sold on that promise, and it keeps the natural grain that slowly turns into patina. Like every Eiken bag, it is covered by our 2 year warranty.

How much fits inside?

A full day, and then some. The 21 litre main compartment takes the laptop in its sleeve, a folder, lunch, a jumper and a pair of trainers; packed lighter, it will do an overnight trip. The zipped lining pocket keeps valuables flat, and the front and side pockets hold what you want without opening the main compartment.

Will my 15.6 inch laptop fit?

Yes. The padded sleeve sits against the back panel and a wide strap holds the machine so it cannot slide when you set the bag down. The body measures 44 cm x 31 cm x 15 cm, so a 15.6 inch laptop rides flat with room beside it for a notebook and a charger.

Can I take it out in the rain?

Everyday rain, yes. The oil immersed leather is water resistant: a shower beads up and wipes off. It is a natural material, not a waterproof shell, so if the bag gets soaked, let it dry naturally away from a radiator and keep it off pale fabrics while it is damp. Whatever the weather leaves behind joins the patina.

Is it comfortable to carry all day?

That is what the back panel is for. The honeycomb mesh padding keeps air moving between the leather and your shirt, and the shoulder straps are padded and leather faced, with webbing adjusters that hold their setting. None of our other vintage leather packs has one: on warm days it is the detail you notice most.

Isn't 2.3 kg heavy for a daily backpack?

It is the honest cost of 2 mm of full grain hide, the same thickness that lets the bag stand upright on its own and take a decade of use. If you count grams before comfort, a modern daypack like the Rover Pack Classic from Topo Designs is the lighter way to go; the KYLO spends its weight on leather thick enough to outlive the laptop inside it.

What is the difference between the Brown and Coffee colours?

The hide and the hardware are identical; only the finish changes. Brown is a light tan that patinas fast and visibly. Coffee is a deep chocolate that hides scratches longer and reads more formal over a coat. If you want the bag to look lived in by spring, take Brown; if you want it quiet, take Coffee.

How do I care for the leather?

Very little is needed. Light scratches rub out with a soft cloth and a drop of vegetable oil; deeper marks stay and become part of the bag. Let it dry naturally whenever it gets wet, and keep the fresh leather away from light coloured fabrics at first: oil immersed hide can transfer a little colour, and if it does, it comes out in the wash.
