RUTFORD: A Soft Leather Backpack That Carries Like a Broken-In Jacket

Last train home. The bag lands between your feet and does what stiff bags never do: it settles. The leather folds at the shoulders, the lid slumps over whatever you packed, and the silhouette takes the shape of your day. That slouch is the point of the RUTFORD. Most leather backpacks are built like small suitcases, all panels and stiffeners. This one is cut from thick crazy horse leather and left unstructured, so it moves when you move.

Crazy horse leather is full grain cowhide immersed in oils and waxes until the fibers are saturated. Scratch it and the mark sits on the surface; rub it with your thumb and it fades. Press it against doorframes and train seats for a year and the coffee brown surface burnishes lighter at every contact point, until the bag has mapped where it has been. No two age the same way, which is exactly what we like about this leather.

Oil immersed leather products can be prone by nature to colour transference on light fabrics. To avoid that, please make sure to dry your leather if it gets wet and try avoid contact with light coloured fabrics. If you however notice some stains, don't worry, it come out in the wash.
