Gjalp Backpack 18L - 314.5 g, and It Takes a 16" Laptop (18 L)

Pick the Klättermusen Gjalp Backpack 18L up empty and the first reaction is usually to check the label again. 314.5 grams is what a full water bottle weighs, and yet this is a pack with a laptop sleeve that fits 16 inches and a full-access zipper down the front.

The fabric explains it: Retina® Light in Econyl®, a 70D weave at just 88 g/m², about as fine as a pack fabric gets before it stops being a pack. The bottom is reinforced with Hardur®, so the part that meets pavement is the toughest part of it.

What you get for that lightness is a bag that behaves differently through the day. It opens flat, like a case, so the laptop goes in and out at a desk without a wrestle. It is also prepared for trekking poles and ready for a hydration system, which is the whole idea.

FAQ

Does the Gjalp 18L really fit a 15-inch laptop?

Yes. It has a dedicated laptop sleeve rated for 16" inside the main compartment. The full-access zipper means the pack opens flat, so the machine slides in and out rather than being forced down through a narrow opening.

Is a 314.5 g backpack durable enough?

The shell is a fine 70D fabric at 88 g/m², so it is light rather than armoured, and it will not enjoy being dragged over granite. Klättermusen reinforced the part that matters: the bottom is Hardur®, a 280 g/m² aramid blend. Treat it as a light pack with a tough base and it lasts.

Is it waterproof?

It is water resistant. The main fabric carries a PU coating and a durable water-repellent finish rated above 1 500 mm water column, which covers showers and a wet commute. For sustained mountain rain, the fully taped Fjörm Backpack 18L is the pack built for it.

How much weight can I put in it?

Klättermusen recommends up to 5 kg. There is no hip belt or frame, so the load sits on your shoulders through ergonomic straps. A laptop, a layer, lunch and a bottle is comfortably inside that figure.

Can I use it for hiking?

How do I clean and maintain it?

Wipe it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. No machine wash, no tumble dryer, no solvents: on a fabric this fine they do real damage and strip the water-repellent finish. Dry it open, away from radiators, and empty the front pocket before storing it flat.
