Gjalp Backpack 18L - 314.5 g, and It Takes a 16" Laptop (18 L)

Pick the Klättermusen Gjalp Backpack 18L up empty and the first reaction is usually to check the label again. 314.5 grams is what a full water bottle weighs, and yet this is a pack with a laptop sleeve that fits 16 inches and a full-access zipper down the front.

The fabric explains it: Retina® Light in Econyl®, a 70D weave at just 88 g/m², about as fine as a pack fabric gets before it stops being a pack. The bottom is reinforced with Hardur®, so the part that meets pavement is the toughest part of it.

What you get for that lightness is a bag that behaves differently through the day. It opens flat, like a case, so the laptop goes in and out at a desk without a wrestle. It is also prepared for trekking poles and ready for a hydration system, which is the whole idea.

Who is it for?

People whose day does not split cleanly into work and outdoors. Commuters who hike, travellers who want a second bag that weighs nothing, and anyone who has carried a 900 g daypack around a city and wondered why.

What Makes the Real Difference Day to Day

At this weight, every feature had to justify the grams it costs. These are the ones that survived.

  • ✔️ 314.5 g total: a full daypack that weighs less than the lunch you put in it.
  • ✔️ Laptop sleeve up to 16": a real padded sleeve, not an afterthought pocket.
  • ✔️ Full-access zipper: the bag opens flat, so you pack and unpack like a case.
  • ✔️ Hardur® reinforced bottom: a 280 g/m² aramid blend on the panel that meets the ground.
  • ✔️ Hydration ready and pole ready: a bladder fits, and trekking poles have somewhere to go.
  • ✔️ Econyl® recycled polyamide: bluesign® approved, GRS certified, PFC-free, at 70D and 88 g/m².

The big front pocket takes what you touch most often, which keeps the main compartment for the laptop and a layer. There is no hip belt and no frame, and at 18 litres for a 5 kg load, there does not need to be.

Who This Pack Is For

The Gjalp is the lightest pack in the Klättermusen range at Eiken, and that shapes who it suits.

  • You commute with a laptop and do not want to carry a kilo of empty bag to do it.
  • You travel and want a packable second bag that takes a 16" machine.
  • You hike after work and need poles and a bladder to be an option, not a project.
  • You open your bag at a desk and prefer a full-length zip to digging down a tube.
  • You buy recycled and want Econyl® with bluesign® and GRS behind it.

The honest line is the fabric: at 1 500 mm water column and a 5 kg recommended load, the Gjalp handles showers and a commute, not a day of mountain rain under a heavy pack. If your weather is worse than that, the fully taped Fjörm Backpack 18L is the same volume built for it.

Within the Klättermusen range, the next step up in trail capability is the Gilling Backpack 20L. If you want more structure and volume for the same commute-and-trail mix, the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 26L is the heavier, roomier alternative.

FAQ

+

Yes. It has a dedicated laptop sleeve rated for 16" inside the main compartment. The full-access zipper means the pack opens flat, so the machine slides in and out rather than being forced down through a narrow opening.

+

The shell is a fine 70D fabric at 88 g/m², so it is light rather than armoured, and it will not enjoy being dragged over granite. Klättermusen reinforced the part that matters: the bottom is Hardur®, a 280 g/m² aramid blend. Treat it as a light pack with a tough base and it lasts.

+

It is water resistant. The main fabric carries a PU coating and a durable water-repellent finish rated above 1 500 mm water column, which covers showers and a wet commute. For sustained mountain rain, the fully taped Fjörm Backpack 18L is the pack built for it.

+

Klättermusen recommends up to 5 kg. There is no hip belt or frame, so the load sits on your shoulders through ergonomic straps. A laptop, a layer, lunch and a bottle is comfortably inside that figure.

+

Yes, for day hikes within the 5 kg limit. It is prepared for trekking poles and hydration system ready. For technical trails with a heavier load and a ventilated carry system, step up to the Gilling Backpack 20L.

+

A regenerated polyamide made from nylon waste, here 50% post-consumer and 50% pre-consumer, woven as Retina® Light at 70D. The fabric is bluesign® approved and GRS certified, and the pack carries no fluorocarbon treatment.

+

Wipe it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. No machine wash, no tumble dryer, no solvents: on a fabric this fine they do real damage and strip the water-repellent finish. Dry it open, away from radiators, and empty the front pocket before storing it flat.
