Deuter · Vertrail 16
Roll-top shut, ice axe outside: 16 litres for the ridge.
On the rocks at the edge of the snow, the rope tucks under the elastic cords and the ice axe sits snug on the front, without opening anything. With the roll-top rolled and closed, it keeps downpours and splashes out: waterproof to the IPX4 standard, TPU-coated fabric, taped seams. On your back, it's worn like a vest, with water and poles up front.
Mountaineering · Ridges · Fast alpine routes
Helmet and ice axe outside, and the rain kept out too.

A tour of the pack
The Vertrail 16, explained by its product manager.
On the move
Water, poles and phone all come out at the front, without putting the pack down.

In the rain
Roll-top shut, the downpour stays outside.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
In steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads up on the fabric. In steady rain, it eventually gets through at the seams and zips.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
In a downpour, the pack goes under its cover. Without it, water eventually gets in through the seams and zips.
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
The body of the pack is TPU-coated 220D polyamide, with taped seams and coated zips: with the roll-top rolled and closed, it protects its contents from rain and splashing water (IPX4).
This bag
Waterproof once the roll-top is rolled and closed, against rain and splashes (IPX4), not immersion; with the roll-top open, that protection is gone.

What fits inside
16L
16 litres under the roll-top: jacket, warm layer, water.
The top rolls down and buckles, and the roll-top adjusts to what's inside: rolled tight for a short route, barely folded when you need a little extra room. Inside, a pocket keeps keys and papers safe, and there's space for a hydration reservoir up to 3 litres; the flasks and phone travel up front.
- A rain jacket and a warm layer
- A hydration reservoir up to 3 L
- Keys and papers, in the inner pocket
In the field

Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- A 16-litre pack worn like a vest that takes a helmet, ice axe and crampons, and stays waterproof in a downpour once the roll-top is rolled and closed: all for 480 g.
- Worth knowing
- Recommended load of 1 to 3 kg: beyond that, take a bigger climbing pack.
- Who it's for
- Mountaineers and climbers who go fast and light, and trail runners heading into alpine terrain.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Questions
What are the dimensions and weight of the Vertrail 16?
52 × 23 × 18 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 480 g, for 16 litres. Recommended load: 1 to 3 kg.
Is the Vertrail 16 waterproof?
Yes, once the roll-top is rolled and closed: TPU-coated fabric, taped seams and coated zips make it waterproof against rain and splashing water, to the IPX4 standard. IPX4 covers rain and splashes, not immersion.
Vertrail 16 or Ascender 13?
Both are worn like a vest, with flasks and poles up front. The Vertrail 16 weighs 140 g more, but it takes 3 litres more, plus a helmet, an ice axe and crampons, and it's waterproof against rain and splashes (IPX4) once the roll-top is rolled and closed. For running, the Ascender 13 is still the lighter of the two.
Is the Vertrail 16 the right size for me?
It's recommended for 158 to 195 cm tall, for a back length of 38 to 54 cm. The vest tightens with the load lifters and the two adjustable, removable sternum straps.
How do you attach an ice axe and a helmet to the Vertrail 16?
The ice axe attaches to the front, spike in the bottom loop and head under a cord. The helmet holder unfolds on the front and tucks away when you don't need it. The two attachment cords also hold crampons or a rope.
