When you look at the catalogue of travel backpacks available on the internet, and the different sites that offer reviews or comparisons, it is easy to lose your mind. 

So we thought about the question: how to choose the best travel backpack, without spending too much time on it? 

Because in fact, there is not really ONE best travel backpack. Why is that? Simply because everyone is different, has different needs and expectations and the right question to ask is, what is the best travel backpack for me?

I. What Is a Travel Backpack?

It would be nice to start there. What are we talking about when we talk about a travel backpack?

A travel backpack is a portable carrier designed for ease of movement and organization, featuring multiple compartments, ergonomic design, and often built to meet airline carry-on standards. Ideal for urban exploration or weekend getaways, it offers a blend of utility and comfort for modern travelers.

Simply put, a travel backpack is a bag designed specifically for travel and trips that go beyond day-to-day life.

If this first point doesn't fit your needs, you should look for a work, commuter or city backpack instead.

But what are the particular features that characterize a travel backpack? I think we can sum it up in three main points:

1. Designed to withstand the rigours of travel

During a trip, your backpack is your best friend, literally. You trust your best friend, right? It must therefore be reliable and resistant, whether it is to bad weather or to the hazards of travel (wear and tear).

Travel backpacks are therefore most often designed with innovative, durable, waterproof and ultra-resistant materials such as high-quality polyester or nylon in order to guarantee maximum security for your travel essentials.

The devil, they say, is in the details. Travel packs often feature waterproof zippers, rain covers, reinforced seams, protective rivets and so on. All technical features that you don't necessarily find on everyday backpacks.

The goal of these travel partners is to allow you to enjoy your travels without worrying about the contents of your bag getting wet or damaged.

Some bags go even further by adding security features to avoid having your essentials stolen in the subway for example. Some travel backpacks come with lockable closures, anti-theft components and more.

You'll find dedicated laptop compartments, compression systems to maximize packing space and carrying cubes to optimise space, USB ports to charge your smartphone on the go and a multitude of compartments to store and organise your life as efficiently as possible.

Some of these features are found on everyday bags, but travel backpacks concentrate as many of them as possible to make your getaway easier and more enjoyable.

It seems logical, but when you walk for 10 hours, in town or in the mountains, having a comfortable travel backpack is a must.

I might as well tell you that the first trek I undertook with my old city bag gave me a lot of troubles: chronic backache, excessive sweating, irritations under the arms (not to mention mosquito bites and sunburns which are only my own responsibility, or stupidity).

To avoid this, travel and hiking backpacks are designed to be comfortable to wear, even for long periods. They include various specific features to lighten the load on your back, distribute the weight evenly and reduce stress and take care of your body, which is already put to the test by the trip.

These bags incorporate padded backpacks and shoulder straps, offload mechanisms, sternum/chest belts, hip belts and more. Personally, this is one of the things I look at first and value most on a travel backpack. By protecting yourself, you'll go faster, farther and in better condition.

There is no official definition but these few points sum up, in our opinion, what a travel backpack is. Now that you know more, it's time to look at the different factors you can consider in your search.

II. Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Travel Backpack

Before you jump into the search for your future travel companion, we'll outline a few factors to consider before you even begin your search. This will allow you to clearly identify what you need and will save you a lot of time when the time comes.

This is especially important because a carry on travel backpack often represents a significant investment, and it's best not to regret it after a few days of travel or in the middle of your trek.

So yes, this process requires some time and personal reflection, but it will help you to target and prioritize what you need or not. Here is a non-exhaustive list of things to consider.

1. Trip Length & Purpose

Whether you go to London for a few days or travel around the world for 6 months (yes, we are in extremes I know) will impact the size and capacity of your travel bag. It is therefore important to have an idea of the overall length of your trip.

The location of the trip is also important. 15 days in the Arctic or in Punta Cana do not require the same logistics nor the same load of clothes. Similarly, if you go to the city or in the middle of the jungle, you will not have the same access to hygiene or to power outlets to recharge your equipment. So it's a good idea to think about the space you'll need to carry these items.

Likewise, take the time to consider the activities you will be doing. If you are planning a sports trip, involving several activities, you will need more space for two reasons:

1. The first is the functionality of your bag itself. If you tend to enjoy outdoor activities, a backpack with a hydration pouch, padded shoulder straps and a rain cover will be appropriate, for example.
2. The second is organization and space requirements. If you wish to participate in numerous activities, you will need technical equipment, which can quickly become cumbersome. You can always rent the equipment on site, but the price of the rental can have a big impact on your budget. 

2. Lifestyle & Personal Preferences

You're starting to get the idea, but this article is all about you. If you like to carry your entire house with you or if you're more of a minimalist who just wants the essentials, your ideal travel backpack won't be the same. So try to make a list of what you're planning to take with you.

A little tip, if you're not sure where you stand, you can separate items according to their importance, or more simply separate them into those you must take and those you want to take. You will quickly realize which category you are in (you can also be borderline, we don't like to put people in boxes).

Also consider your hobbies. We all know how much a photographer needs a lot of accessories to immortalize his trip. As mentioned above, make a list of your essentials and try to see what is essential and what can be optional. Feel free to bring 50kg of items, you will probably regret it quickly (or you will turn into the Hulk after a week).

Also, if you are prone to certain chronic pain or illnesses, think about what you need to be comfortable. This is especially true for back problems, which are subject to relatively heavy loads over long periods of time. It's better to invest a little more in an ergonomic and comfortable bag than to find yourself bent over on the side of a road (people might think you're in the middle of a yoga session).

1. Measure your torso length: The torso length is the distance from the base of your neck to the top of your hips. To measure your torso length, have someone help you measure the distance between the C7 vertebra (the bony bump at the base of your neck) and the top of your hip bone.

With hundreds of brands and models available on the market, there is a bag for everyone so you won't be left out. What will vary is the importance you want to give to this travel accessory. On our side, we prefer not to skimp on the budget, even if it means cutting back on some other expenses. It's a big initial investment, but it will save you money over time and will probably last for many years.

III. What are the Essential Features of a Travel Backpack?

After questioning yourself, you will have a more accurate idea of your needs. We will now address the essential features of a travel backpack to help you identify those that will be most useful to you. It is then up to you to prioritise them according to your research.

The most essential features of a travel backpacks are: capacity, weight and size, materials, comfort, accessibility and security.

1. Capacity

The capacity of a travel backpack is surely one of the most important criteria to consider. You need to make sure that your backpack has enough space to carry everything you need. Traveling with a backpack that is too small will frustrate you by forcing you to make hard choices. Traveling with a backpack that is too large will weigh you down unnecessarily and hinder you in the long run.

It is therefore essential to choose the right capacity to carry what you need without adding unnecessary weight on your shoulders. Backpack volumes are most often measured in liters and vary quite a bit, from 15 to 20 L for everyday backpacks to over 70 L for the most spacious travel backpacks.

1. How to determine the right capacity for your travel needs?

Determining the ideal volume may seem a bit complicated at first. By following the following process, you will have the best chance of getting it right. If you're still unsure after that, we recommend taking an extra 10L, adding little weight to the bag while keeping a good margin.

1. Make a list of items: start by making a list of everything you would like to take with you. Be specific and classify the items you are taking by category (hygiene, clothing, tech, equipment, safety etc). You can then prioritize the items according to their importance, between the absolute essentials and the guilty pleasures
2. Consider the length of your trip: this section has already been covered but we'll remind you here to help you identify the volume of items to bring.
3. Think about your travel style: again, this part has already been discussed. You can list the activities you want to do and note all the accessories required. This is a good time to see if the most cumbersome items can't be rented locally, and at what price
4. Pack your items: once the list is complete, simulate a departure by packing them all in a suitcase or a travel bag you already own. This will give you a good idea of the volume you need. If your suitcase is 50L and is not enough, you can discard the lower volumes. If you only have "small" bags, nothing prevents you from filling several of them and adding up the volumes at the end.
5. Measure the volume: Measure the volume: to know the volume of your luggage, you can either go to the product sheet of the model or measure its height, length and width. To obtain the volume, you must use the following function: Volume (in L) = Length x width x height (in cm) / 1000

• Extra-large backpacks (70 liters or more): volume recommended for long adventures, from several weeks to several months. It allows you to take with you everything you need but will be much more cumbersome to carry.

This list is not exhaustive and is just one example among many. A given volume on two different bags can allow you to store more or less stuff, because of the design and the general shape of the bag. Similarly, the way you store your belongings and optimize space can allow you to store more or less accessories in the same bag. Don't hesitate to practice optimizing your bag's storage to save as much space as possible. 

2. Weight & Size

1. the size and volume: the larger your backpack, the more weight the materials used.
2. the choice of materials: a full grain leather bag weighs much more than a nylon bag. The choice of materials has a strong influence on the final weight of your backpack
3. the functionality of the bag: the more functionality a bag offers, the heavier it will be. Reinforcements, extra belts, hydration pockets, rain covers, etc. all add weight to the final result.

To find the perfect bag, you need to look for the balance that best suits you. For example, if you're looking for a backpack that's light but spacious, consider nylon or polyester bags that are more minimalist in terms of extra features.

The materials used to manufacture your travel backpack and their overall durability are crucial criteria when choosing your adventure partner. You want a bag that can withstand use and wear and tear, that protects your belongings from shocks and bad weather (wind, rain, snow, mud). Traveling with a light mind is a lot more fun, right?

To guarantee this, modern travel backpacks offer a wide range of materials, increasingly technical, robust and efficient. Opting for sturdy materials not only gives you peace of mind but also extends the life of your backpack. 

In addition, the overall design and finish also plays into the overall durability. A bag with waterproof zippers, lined seams or reinforced hang points increases your bag's ability to withstand the onslaught of life.

Finally, you can look at the various warranties offered by brands. This indicates two things. The first is to see if your bag can be replaced or repaired in case of damage. The second is to judge the brand's confidence in its products. If you come across a lifetime warranty for example, chances are the brand has few returns and can afford such a warranty, offering a good indicator of the quality of their products.
