A Crazy Horse Leather Backpack Already Broken In

The first scratch lands in week one, off a desk corner or a train door. Rub it with your thumb: it darkens, softens, and settles into the marbling as if it had always been there. That is crazy horse leather doing its job, a full grain hide immersed in oil that arrives already lived in, so nothing you add to it reads as damage.

The TYREE puts that hide on your back: 14 L in a softback body, antiqued brass pulls on leather lanyards, a curved zip pocket across the front. It comes in two browns, Brown the dark chocolate and Coffee the light caramel.

Everything else about this crazy horse leather backpack assumes you move. At 41 x 28 x 12 cm it clears all three common cabin gauges, the strict 45 x 36 x 20 cm small bag allowance included, and it weighs 1.3 kg before you pack it.

Brown is the dark chocolate of the pair, Coffee the light caramel: same hide, two starting points for the same patina. Marks surface easily on crazy horse and most rub back out; the rest settle in as the grain's history. If you want leather that stays smooth and uniform, this finish is the wrong one for you.

Note: full grain leather is a natural material and may show small traces, veins or marks inherent to the hide. Light scratches come out by rubbing them with a cloth and a drop of vegetable oil. The colour can vary slightly from one batch of hides to the next.

Oil immersed leather can leave a little colour on light fabrics, especially while it is new, damp or very warm. If the bag gets wet, let it dry naturally and keep it away from pale clothing until it has.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the TYREE made from real leather?

Yes, and not a thin split either: crazy horse leather, a full grain hide immersed in oil. The treatment gives the surface its matte, slightly weathered look and its two tone marbling, and it is why the bag improves with age instead of wearing out.

Mine arrived with marks on the leather. Is that a defect?

It is the finish. The oil immersion pulls two tones out of the hide, so every panel arrives marbled and lightly traced, and no two bags match. New marks behave the same way: most fade back into the surface with nothing more than a soft cloth.

Which colour is the dark one, Brown or Coffee?

Brown is the dark one, a deep chocolate: it is the bag in the photos on this page. Coffee is the light caramel shown in the product carousel above. Same leather, same construction, two starting tones for the patina.

Will my laptop fit?

Yes. The interior carries a 15.6" laptop sleeve against the back panel, plus a zipped pocket in the lid and a slot pocket for the small flat things. In the capacity photo, the main compartment holds an iPad mini, a zipped organiser, magazines and a water bottle on top of that.

Can I take it on a plane as hand luggage?

Yes. At 41 cm x 28 cm x 12 cm it fits all three common cabin gauges, including the strict 45 x 36 x 20 cm small bag allowance, so it rides under the seat in front of you. Between gates, the band on the back slides over a trolley handle and the bag travels on top of your suitcase.

What if it gets caught in the rain?

The oiled hide is water resistant, not waterproof: there is no membrane in it. A shower on the way to the station is nothing to worry about. If the bag gets properly soaked, let it dry naturally away from radiators, and keep it off pale fabrics while it is damp or very warm, as oil immersed leather can leave a little colour on light clothing.

How do I care for crazy horse leather?

Barely at all. Rub light scratches with a cloth and a drop of vegetable oil; the small veins and traces that appear over time belong to the hide, and there is no coating to maintain. The TYREE is covered by our 2 year warranty, with 30 days to return it.
