The Women's Leather Backpack With a Pocket Against Your Spine

Phone into the back pocket, zip drawn up, and the metro can be as packed as it likes: that pocket rides flat between the shoulder straps of the AYA, against your spine, and it opens for nobody but you. The rest of the bag follows the same logic. One zipped pocket on the front for the wallet, one on each flank for keys and ticket, so the things you reach for all day never sink to the bottom.

The hide is oiled crazy horse leather, full grain and marbled: the leather you know from vintage packs drawn for men, cut here to 40 x 31 x 15 cm for a woman's back. Drag a nail across it and the mark sits pale until your thumb rubs it dark again. If that patina is what brought you here, this is the bag it lives on.

Where the 20 Litres Go

Inside sits one main compartment with a smartphone pouch, a zipped pocket and a velcro sleeve that keeps a 15.6 inch laptop flat against the back panel. Outside, four zipped pockets take the small stuff, so in the street the main zip stays shut.

Note: full grain leather is a natural material and may show small traces, veins or marks inherent to the hide. Light scratches disappear when rubbed with a cloth and a drop of vegetable oil. The colour may vary slightly from batch to batch.

Is it too big for a woman?

No. The AYA is 40 cm tall, 31 wide and 15 deep: a mid-sized working backpack, clearly smaller than the full-sized packs of our vintage line. The webbing adjusters bring the shoulder straps in as short as you need, and the load rides flat against the leather back panel rather than hanging off your shoulders.

Is the AYA made from real leather?

Yes: full grain crazy horse leather, the top layer of the hide finished with oils and waxes. The marbling across the surface, the pale scratches that rub back to dark, the deepening colour where your hands land: only full grain behaves like that. Will my 15.6 inch laptop fit?

Yes. The main compartment holds a dedicated sleeve for laptops up to 15.6 inches, closed with a velcro strap, so the machine stays flat against the back panel instead of shifting around when the bag tilts.

Is it safe on public transport?

That is the job of the back zip pocket. It sits between the shoulder straps, flat against your spine, so while you wear the bag your phone and cards stay out of everyone's reach but yours. The front and side zips hold what you want fast, and the main compartment closes on double sliders you can hear run home.

Can a man wear it?

Yes. The proportions are drawn for women, but the leather, the brass and the build are the same as the rest of the line, and the lifestyle photos on this page are in fact worn by a man. On a broader back it simply reads as a compact pack.

How will the leather age?

Crazy horse is made to mark. The waxed surface scratches pale, rubs back to dark, and over the months the places your hands return to, the handle and the corners first, go deeper in colour. After a year no two of these bags read the same, which is most of the point of the leather.

How do I care for it?

Very little. A cloth with a drop of vegetable oil closes light scratches; if the bag gets wet, let it dry naturally and keep it off pale clothing while damp, since oiled leather can pass a little colour. The AYA is covered by our 2-year warranty, with 30-day returns.
