Skinning along the ridge, eyeing the couloirs opposite for the descent.
On the ridge, skins on, you climb facing the couloirs you'll be riding down later. The Freerider Pro 32+10 carries the shovel and probe in their own pocket, with the helmet clipped outside; it opens wide from the back without unstrapping anything, and its roll-top gives you 10 more litres on days when you sleep up high.

Freeride
5 out of 5
The line comes first: board or skis strapped on, shovel and probe within reach.
Ski touring, splitboarding
5 out of 5
Multi-day climbs, with 10 more litres under the roll-top.
Snowshoeing
3 out of 5
Snowshoes strap onto the front.
Climbing
3 out of 5
For the approach to a route, the rope goes on top of the pack.
Hiking
3 out of 5
It does the job away from snow, but its LiteSnow back is made for winter.
Alpine mountaineering
2 out of 5
Ice axes attach at the front; for a mountaineering route, go lighter.

What fits inside
32+10L
32 litres, and 10 more when you unroll the roll-top.
The main compartment closes with a zip, under a roll-top that unrolls when you need space; two stowable straps then cinch the load and hold the rope. Even when it's full, the top of the pack doesn't get in the way of your head when you look up.
- Shovel, probe and first-aid kit, in the avalanche safety pocket
- A zipped mesh inner pocket, and another for wet gear
- A hydration reservoir up to 3 L
In the field
Airborne between the trees, then at the edge of the cornice.

- The frameA flexible U-shaped Delrin frame gives the pack its structure.
- The hip beltPadded hip fins, with a zipped pocket on each side.
- AdjustmentsLoad lifters, a sternum strap with a one-handed buckle, and a grab handle.

A tour of the pack
Five minutes around the pack: skis, board, shovel and probe, and the rope on the roll-top.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- It's rated 5 out of 5 for the climb and the descent alike: you open it from the back without letting go of the board, and the roll-top turns a daypack into a multi-day pack.
- Worth knowing
- One size for a 38 to 54 cm back: under 1.78 m, try the 30+10 SL too, 4 cm shorter.
- Who it's for
- For snowboarders, splitboarders and skiers who climb on foot to find their line and want to head out again the next day without changing packs.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Questions
Freerider Pro 32+10 or 30+10 SL?
Same pack: LiteSnow back panel, back opening, a roll-top that adds 10 litres, same attachment points. The 30+10 SL is 54 cm tall versus 58, weighs 1,080 g and is made for a 38 to 48 cm back (height 158 to 178 cm), with a harness shaped for a woman's body; the 32+10 covers a 38 to 54 cm back (158 to 195 cm).
Freerider Pro 32+10 or Freescape Tour 32?
The Freerider is rated 5 out of 5 for freeride, the Freescape Tour 3. The first carries a snowboard on the front and grows by 10 litres through its roll-top; the second closes with a roll-top topped by an adjustable, removable lid. Both open from the back and have the LiteSnow back panel and an avalanche safety pocket.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Freerider Pro 32+10?
58 × 33 × 18 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 1,100 g empty, for 32 litres, plus 10 litres when you unroll the roll-top. Recommended load: 6 to 10 kg.
How do you carry a snowboard on the Freerider Pro 32+10?
Upright on the front, under its straps; they also take a pair of snowshoes. Skis are carried diagonally or on the side, and the board stays in place when you open the pack from the back.
Is the Freerider Pro 32+10 waterproof?
No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
