The ROME Watch Roll, Cut From Crazy Horse Leather

Friday, 6 pm. The duffle sits open on the bed and your chronograph is about to travel the way it always does: wrapped in a t-shirt, wedged between your shoes, bracelet grinding against a belt buckle somewhere over the Alps. The ROME ends that habit. It is a cylindrical watch roll, 18.5 cm end to end, that gives one or two watches a padded berth of their own before they go anywhere near a packed bag.

We cut it from crazy horse leather: full grain hide immersed in oils until the color runs deep and uneven, dark brown shifting to amber where the surface catches light. Scratch it with a thumbnail and a pale mark appears; rub it and the mark melts back into the grain. That is the point of this leather. It takes airports, glove boxes and hotel nightstands, and every scuff settles into patina instead of damage.

Inside, the walls are lined with a soft suede-feel finish, so nothing hard ever touches a crystal or a polished caseback. At 180 grams empty, the ROME weighs less than most of the watches it carries.

It is not for everyone. If you fly with a five-piece collection or check your luggage with watches inside, you want a rigid aluminum case with a crush-proof shell, not a soft leather watch case. The ROME protects against scratches, knocks and bad packing habits; it will not save a watch from a suitcase dropped corner-first onto tarmac. Know which problem you are solving.

ROME Watch Roll: your questions

How many watches does the ROME watch roll hold?

Two. The interior compartment holds two removable watch pillows, and each pillow carries one watch with the bracelet or strap wrapped around it.

Will a large watch fit inside?

The case measures 18.5 x 8 x 8 cm. In our photos a full-size steel chronograph sits on its pillow next to a smaller dress watch with room to spare, so sports watches and dress pieces both fit. Extreme oversized cases are the only ones we would hesitate on.

Are the watch pillows removable?

Yes. Both pillows lift straight out. Take one or both out and the soft-lined tube becomes a case for bracelets, bangles or a folded chain.

Can I put it in checked luggage?

We advise against it. The ROME is a soft leather watch case: it protects against scratches, knocks and pressure from other items in a bag, not against a heavy suitcase being crushed or thrown. Keep it in your cabin bag or leather duffle, where it belongs.

What is crazy horse leather, and will it scratch?

Crazy horse is full grain leather immersed in oils after tanning. It will scratch, and that is by design: light marks appear pale, then fade when you rub them. Over months of use the surface darkens into a patina unique to your case.

How does it close?

The main flap closes on magnetic clips, and a leather strap folds over the whole roll and clips shut on top of it. Two layers, so the case stays shut under pressure in a packed bag.
