Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- It carries rope, ice axes, helmet and avalanche gear on a short back, with no lid or back opening to haul around for nothing: 950 g for a technical day.
- Worth knowing
- No lid and no back opening: for multi-day trips, the Freescape Tour 30 SL.
- Who it's for
- For a technical day: couloirs, kick turns, rope and ice axes in the pack.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Questions
Freescape Lite 24 SL or Lite 26?
Same construction: roll-top, side access, avalanche safety pocket, LiteSnow back panel, same attachment points. The 24 SL is aimed at heights of 158 to 178 cm (38 to 48 cm back) and its harness is shaped for a woman's body; it's 62 cm tall versus 64 and weighs 950 g versus 1,000 g. The Lite 26 is aimed at a 44 to 54 cm back.
What height is the Freescape Lite 24 SL for?
It's made for a height of 158 to 178 cm, meaning a 38 to 48 cm back. Above that, the Lite 26 (44 to 54 cm back, 170 to 195 cm) has the same construction.
Freescape Lite 24 SL or Updays 24 SL?
Both are SL-fit packs for a single day's ascent. The Updays weighs 680 g and sticks to the essentials: skis carried diagonally, a shovel compartment, one ice axe loop. The Lite 24 SL weighs 950 g and carries more on the outside: rope, two ice axes, snowshoes, skis diagonally or on the side, on a LiteSnow back panel that snow won't stick to.
What goes in the front pocket of the Freescape Lite 24 SL?
It's the avalanche safety pocket: the shovel, probe and first-aid kit stay there, apart from everything else and within easy reach.
Is the Freescape Lite 24 SL waterproof?
Its main fabric is water-repellent: water beads up on the surface. That doesn't make it waterproof: in steady rain, water eventually gets through at the seams and zips. Anything that has to stay dry goes in a pouch.
