Deuter · Access 55
Opens like a suitcase, carries like a pack: 55 litres for getting away.
At the hostel, you put the pack on the bed and open the whole front: your clothes are right there, folded, held by the straps, with nothing to dig out from the top. On the morning you leave, the cover zips over the shoulder straps, a padlock goes through the zip pullers, and the Access 55 goes in the hold like a suitcase. When you arrive, it goes back on your back.
Travel · Several weeks · Checked luggage
A suitcase you carry on your back.

What it's for: several weeks away with a single pack, on your back or in the hold.
Hiking
2 out of 5
A walk to the hut or the hostel, not a day in the mountains.
Everyday
1 out of 5
At 55 litres, it's far too big for town.

1 out of 5
For getting to work, it's oversized.

1 out of 5
A camera body can travel between your clothes, but it isn't a camera bag.

What fits inside
55L
55 litres that open from the front, like a suitcase.
A zip runs right round the front: the pack opens flat, and you can pack or search without pulling everything out of the top. Inside straps hold your clothes in place, a zipped compartment keeps your papers apart, and the main compartment's zip pullers lock with a padlock.
- Clothes, held in place by the packing straps
- Shoes, kept apart in their own compartment
- Passport and papers, in the zipped inside compartment

The back system
A padded back that sits close and carries on your hips.
- ContactA padded back on a round-profile spring steel frame: the pack stays close to your body and the load is spread out.
- The shoulder strapsPadded and ergonomically shaped, with load lifters and a sternum strap with continuous adjustment.
- The hip beltPadded hip fins; it tightens as you pull forwards, which also pulls in the sides of the pack.
- StowawayBefore it goes in the hold, a zipped cover closes over the shoulder straps and hip belt.

Before check-in
Shoulder straps stowed, zip padlocked, and off it goes into the hold.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- A pack that thinks about the baggage carousel as much as your back: it opens wide like a suitcase, locks with a padlock and hides its shoulder straps before the hold, then carries on the hip belt the day you have to walk to the station.
- Worth knowing
- 64 cm tall for 55 litres: it travels in the hold, not in the cabin.
- Who it's for
- If you're going away for several weeks with a single pack, from hostel to station, and want to find your things without emptying everything out.

Questions
What are the dimensions and weight of the Access 55?
64 × 36 × 22 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 1,640 g empty, for 55 litres. Recommended load: 5 to 10 kg.
Can the Access 55 go in the cabin?
At 64 cm tall when full, it's over the most common cabin size limits: plan on the hold. Before check-in, its harness stows under a cover and the main zip locks with a padlock. Every airline sets its own rules: check yours.
Is the Access 55 waterproof?
No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
Is the Access 55 the right size for me?
It's recommended for 158 to 195 cm, for a back length of 38 to 54 cm. The padded Contact back sits close to your body, and the padded hip belt takes the load on your hips.
Can I go hiking with the Access 55?
To walk to the hostel or for a few hours on foot, yes: it's rated 2 out of 5 for hiking. For a proper day in the mountains, a hiking pack like the Futura Pro 40 carries the load better and lets air reach your back.
