Deuter · Trail 23 SL
A via ferrata along the way, the lanyard on the shoulder strap: 23 litres.
At the foot of the cable, you keep the pack on: the carabiners of your lanyard wait on the loops of the shoulder straps. The SL fit shortens the back and follows the shape of a woman's body; against you, the Airstripes back touches only through its pads, and air has been flowing through the channels between them since the bottom of the path.
Hiking · Via ferrata · Day hikes
A shorter back, ventilated from the car park to the cable.

Best for
Day hikes, cabled sections included.

Hiking
5 out of 5
The big day out, with a via ferrata along the way.
Not its terrain
- Alpine mountaineering2 out of 5The ice axe loops help out on a snowfield, no further.
- Climbing, bouldering2 out of 5For carrying water and a jacket to the foot of the routes.
- Travel1 out of 5It opens wide, but it's still a trail pack.

The back system
A shorter back that lets the air through, on a flexible frame.
- AirstripesPads separated by wide channels: little contact with your back, and air moves over 80% of its surface.
- AdjustmentsMoving ActiveFit shoulder straps with soft edges, load lifters, a continuously adjustable sternum strap.
- The frameA flexible U-shaped Delrin frame holds the pack's shape and spreads the load.
The right fit
SL fit, designed for a woman's build. Recommended for heights of 158 to 178 cm and back lengths of 38 to 48 cm. Also available in the standard fit. See the Trail 25

What fits inside
23L
The whole day fits inside, and it opens wide.
The zip runs round the top of the pack and opens it wide: you find the first-aid kit without emptying the rest.
- A jacket, a warm layer and the picnic
- A hydration reservoir up to 3 L, in the elastic compartment
- Keys and papers, in the zipped inside pocket
Within reach
A cap on the front, poles on the side, a hip belt that folds away.

In the rain
The late-afternoon storm: the cover goes over the pack.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
Water gets in eventually: anything that hates water goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads on the fabric, but gets through the seams and zips in steady rain.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
A cover supplied with the pack wraps all of it when the downpour sets in.
This bag
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
Once closed, the pack keeps its contents safe from rain and splashes (IPX4), not from immersion.
Without its cover, it won't get through a day of rain: keep the cover in the pack.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- A shorter back that stays ventilated, a pack that opens wide and loops for your lanyard: a day's hiking, via ferrata included, without changing packs.
- Worth knowing
- Recommended load 4 to 7 kg: beyond that, the Futura Pro 30 SL and its steel frame carry better.
- Who it's for
- If your hiking days include cabled sections.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Questions
What are the dimensions and weight of the Trail 23 SL?
50 × 25 × 19 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 970 g, for 23 litres. Recommended load: 4 to 7 kg.
Is the Trail 23 SL waterproof?
It isn't waterproof, but its rain cover is included: in steady rain, water eventually gets in through a pack's seams and zips, hence the cover. Anything that has to stay dry also goes in a pouch.
Trail 23 SL or Trail 25?
Same pockets, same Airstripes back, same cover. The Trail 23 SL has the shorter back, 38 to 48 cm, for heights of 158 to 178 cm; the Trail 25 adds 2 litres and 50 g, with a back of 44 to 54 cm, for 170 to 195 cm.
What's different about the SL fit?
It's the women's fit of the Trail: the back is shorter and the harness shaped for a woman's body; the Trail 23 SL is recommended for 158 to 178 cm. The pockets, the cover and the Airstripes back are the same as on the Trail 25.
What hydration reservoir fits the Trail 23 SL?
A hydration reservoir up to 3 litres, in the elastic inside compartment, which also takes a wet piece of clothing.
