Deuter · Futura Pro 34 SL
Out early, back late: 34 litres for long days.
The coast stretches on to the next headland, the water bottle is half empty and the day isn't over. The Futura Pro 34 SL carries enough to last until evening: the warm layer in the bottom compartment, lunch under the lid, the water bottle in the side pocket. On a shorter harness, the mesh keeps your back cool all the way home.
Hiking · Long days out · SL fit
Enough to last from dawn to dusk.

Best for
Built for long days, and a few nights in mountain huts.
One notch higher than the 30 SL for trekking, with hiking still in the lead.
Hiking
5 out of 5
Long, loaded outings, when the day starts before dawn.
Trekking
3 out of 5
A few days hut to hut, as long as the load stays under 10 kg.
Alpine mountaineering
1 out of 5
The ice axe clips on one side, but that doesn't make it a climbing pack.
Travel
1 out of 5
It opens at the top and the bottom, not like a suitcase.

What fits inside
34L
34 litres: the warm layer at the bottom, the picnic at the top.
The bottom compartment opens with its own zip: a light sleeping bag or a down jacket waits there for the evening without you having to unpack the rest. Above it, under the lid, the main space cinches with a drawcord; an inside pocket keeps wet gear apart, and there's room for a hydration reservoir up to 3 L.
- A light sleeping bag, for the night in a hut
- Lunch, jacket and first-aid kit, under the lid
- Wet gear, kept apart in its own pocket

The back system
On a shorter back, the load drops onto your hips.
- The SL fitThe women's fit: shorter than the standard fit, shaped for a woman's body, recommended for 158 to 178 cm.
- The meshTensioned over the frame and more flexible at the small of the back, it keeps a gap between the pack and your back: air gets through where your back usually heats up.
- The hip beltPadded in one piece with the shoulder straps, it tightens as you pull forwards and spreads the weight over your hips.
- VariClickFive positions at the centre of the pack, from S to L, and a click to confirm the setting.

In the rain
Rain setting in? The pack goes under its cover.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
In steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads up on the fabric. In steady rain, it eventually gets through at the seams and zips.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
A rain cover comes with the pack.
This bag
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
With the roll-top rolled and closed, the contents are protected from rain and splashing water (IPX4 standard). Not from immersion.
Without its cover, it won't get through a day of rain: keep the cover in the pack.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- The size that was missing between day hikes and trekking: 34 litres on the mesh back, with a bottom compartment where the warm layer waits its turn. Set to your back length, it keeps the load on your hips until evening.
- Worth knowing
- Recommended up to a height of 178 cm: above that, the Futura Pro 36 does the same job in the standard fit.
- Who it's for
- If you're between 158 and 178 cm tall and your outings run from sunrise to sunset.

Questions
Is the Futura Pro 34 SL the right size for me?
It's recommended for 158 to 178 cm, and its back length adjusts at the centre of the pack in five positions, from S to L, with the VariClick system. Above 178 cm, the Futura Pro 36 does the same job in the standard fit, for 170 to 205 cm.
Is the Futura Pro 34 SL waterproof?
It isn't waterproof, but its rain cover is included: in steady rain, water eventually gets in through a pack's seams and zips, hence the cover. Anything that has to stay dry also goes in a pouch.
Futura Pro 34 SL or Futura Pro 38 SL?
The 38 SL adds 4 litres for 20 g and just 1 cm of height (64 cm against 63). Both are rated 3 out of 5 for trekking. The 34 SL for long days and a night in a hut, the 38 SL when the stages follow one after another.
What goes in the bottom compartment?
Whatever you only need when you stop: a down jacket, a light sleeping bag, a change of clothes. It opens with its own zip, and the divider that separates it from the top opens if you'd rather have one big space.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Futura Pro 34 SL?
63 × 32 × 24 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 1,530 g empty, for 34 litres. Recommended load: 6 to 10 kg.
