Deuter · Futura Pro 40
Several stages, one pack: 40 litres, and a cool back.
Day three on the coast path, between the agaves, and the pack hasn't shifted since morning. The Futura Pro 40 keeps the sleeping bag at the bottom, everything else under the lid, and cinches in at the sides when it isn't full. The steel frame sends the weight to the hip belt; the mesh lets air through between your back and the pack.
Trekking · Multi-day routes · Mountain huts
The whole stage on your hips.

What fits inside
40L
40 litres that cinch in when the pack isn't full.
Open the bottom zip: the sleeping bag has its own compartment there, and the divider gets out of the way if you want a single space. Clothes and food load through the big top opening, with the lid closed over them. On days when it's only half full, the side compression straps pull it back in against your back.
- The sleeping bag and headtorch, in the bottom compartment
- Gear for the days ahead, under the lid
- A hydration reservoir up to 3 L, and wet gear kept apart
A tour of the pack
The Futura Pro up close: the back mesh, the hydration reservoir, the bottom compartment, the rain cover that comes with it.
Within reach
Map, water bottle, poles: none of it means putting the pack down.

The back system
The frame carries, the mesh breathes, the hip belt takes the weight.
- AircomfortA tensioned mesh holds the pack off your back; behind it, air moves instead of staying trapped.
- The frameSpring steel, with the shoulder straps anchored to it: the load goes to the hip belt instead of pulling on your shoulders.
- The hip beltPadded, ventilated hip fins, in one piece with the shoulder straps; it tightens as you pull forwards.
- VariClickFive positions from S to L at the centre of the pack, a click at each one, for heights of 170 to 205 cm.

In the rain
When rain catches you mid-stage, the 40 goes under its cover.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
In steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads up on the fabric. In steady rain, it eventually gets through at the seams and zips.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
The rain cover is included with the 40.
This bag
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
With the roll-top rolled and closed, the contents are protected from rain and splashing water (IPX4 standard). Not from immersion.
Without its cover, it won't get through a day of rain: keep the cover in the pack.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- The biggest Futura Pro weighs only 40 g more than the 32. The steel frame and hip belt hold the load as the days add up, and the compression straps cinch it in on days when it's only half full.
- Worth knowing
- 70 cm tall when full: if you're under 170 cm, the 38 SL fits better.
- Who it's for
- Hikers who go hut to hut, stage after stage, and want a ventilated back from the first day to the last.

Questions
What are the dimensions and weight of the Futura Pro 40?
70 × 32 × 24 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 1,620 g empty, for 40 litres. Recommended height: 170 to 205 cm.
Is the Futura Pro 40 waterproof?
It isn't waterproof, but its rain cover is included: in steady rain, water eventually gets in through a pack's seams and zips, hence the cover. Anything that has to stay dry also goes in a pouch.
Futura Pro 40 or Futura Pro 36?
The 40 keeps the back, pockets and rain cover of the 36 and adds 4 litres, for 30 g more. Same trekking rating (3 out of 5): it all comes down to volume. If you're sleeping in huts for more than one night, take the 40.
What can I attach to the pack?
Folded poles on the shoulder strap, an ice axe or extended poles on one side of the pack, under the compression straps. A helmet net can be added as an option, sold separately. There's also a glasses holder and a key clip.
How much weight can it carry?
Its recommended load is 6 to 10 kg. The steel frame and hip belt carry it on your hips; beyond that, you're outside the range this back system is designed for.
