Topo Designs · Rover Trail Pack 24L

24 litres, a hydration sleeve, a hip belt: the Rover for the trail.

The trail climbs, you buckle the hip belt and the Rover Trail Pack, the Rover hiking backpack, settles into your back, hydration bladder inside, hose out through its port, a large water bottle on each side. Under the drawcord and the two buckles, 24 litres of recycled nylon ripstop: the jacket, the picnic, the fleece for the summit. On Monday, hip belt tucked away into the back, it carries your 15-inch to the office. A day on the trail, not a night outdoors.

What fits inside

24L

24 litres for the day: the hydration bladder, the jacket, the picnic.

The top cinches with a drawcord and closes with two buckles; the front opens too, through a J-shaped zip. Inside, a sleeve takes the hydration bladder and its hose comes out through a port made for it. Outside, a zipped front pocket, two large bottle pockets and compression straps on the sides.

  • A hydration bladder, in its inner sleeve, hose out
  • Two large water bottles, one in each side pocket
  • The 15-inch, in the outer sleeve on the back

Ways to carry

In the rain

A shower on the trail: water beads up on the water-repellent fabric.

Not made for rain

Recycled nylon fabric

In steady rain, water eventually gets through: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.

Water-resistant

Water-resistant fabric

The water-resistant fabric copes with a shower; in steady rain, water eventually gets through.

Water-repellent

PFC-free water-repellent finish

A PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) finish makes water bead up on the fabric. It doesn't make the bag waterproof: in steady rain, water eventually gets through.

Topo Designs

A sewing machine in a Fort Collins basement, in 2008.

Since 2008

Jedd Rose buys a sewing machine and sews the first bags in his basement in Fort Collins, Colorado; Mark Hansen asks around for people who can make them.

Tough and simple

The two founders wanted gear like the kit they grew up with: tough, practical, classic, the opposite of throwaway and overcomplicated. The same bag goes from the city to the trail.

Guaranteed, repaired

Topo Designs guarantees its bags against defects in materials and workmanship for a reasonable lifetime, excluding normal wear, accidents and lack of care, and would rather repair than replace. For a bag bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Eiken's take

Why we chose it
The moulded back panel, pocketed hip belt and hydration sleeve of a hiking pack, with the Rover's looks: a day on the trail on Saturday, the office on Monday.
Worth knowing
24 litres is a day out: water, a jacket and a picnic, not a tent and a sleeping bag.
Who it's for
The pack for day hikes that also does the office during the week; to head off with a tent, you need more than 24 litres.

Baptiste, Eiken

Questions

What are the dimensions of the Rover Trail Pack?

53.3 × 25.4 × 16.5 cm (height, width, depth), for 24 litres.

Is the Rover Trail Pack waterproof?

It's water-repellent, not waterproof: a PFC-free DWR finish makes water bead up on the fabric. In steady rain, water eventually gets through.

Can you fit a hydration bladder in it?

Yes: an inner sleeve takes it, and the hose comes out through a port made for it. Two large side pockets also take a water bottle each.

What size laptop fits in the Rover Trail Pack?

A 15-inch at most, in the outer sleeve set into the moulded back panel. For an office pack with two sleeves, see the Rover Pack Tech.

Rover Trail Pack or Rover Pack Classic?

The Classic, 20 litres and 43 cm tall, is the everyday Rover, from the office to the weekend. The Trail, 24 litres and 53 cm, adds a moulded back panel, load lifters, a pocketed hip belt and a sleeve for a hydration bladder: it's the Rover for day hikes.
