Deuter · Futura Pro 36
A long day, sometimes a night in a hut: 36 litres on your back.
A stop above the ocean, poles planted, half the route behind you. The Futura Pro 36 carries a long, loaded day, or what you need for a night in a mountain hut: a separate bottom compartment for the sleeping bag, everything else under the lid. The mesh lets air through between your back and the pack, and the hip belt takes the weight on every climb.

A loaded day, a night in a hut.

Best for
A big day with a load, and a night in a hut.
Ratings from 1 to 5: Deuter data.
Hiking
5 out of 5
Big days out when you carry a little more than a day's worth.
Trekking
3 out of 5
One or two nights in a hut work fine; beyond that, the 40 takes 4 litres more. See the Futura Pro 40
Not its terrain
- Alpine mountaineering1 out of 5An ice axe on the side for an approach, no more.
- Travel1 out of 5Closed with a lid and a drawcord: it isn't made to go in the hold.

What fits inside
36L
A night in a hut fits in the bottom.
At the bottom, a separate compartment with its own zip; the divider opens if you'd rather have one space. Everything else loads from the top, under the lid.
- The light sleeping bag, at the bottom
- A hydration reservoir up to 3 L
- The day's wet gear, kept apart in its own pocket
In the field
At rest, in the rain, by headtorch.

The back system
A frame that carries, a mesh that breathes, a back set with a click.
- AircomfortBetween the mesh and the pack, a gap: air flows from bottom to top, right from the small of your back.
- VariClickThe back adjusts at the centre of the pack, in five positions from S to L.
- The strapsLoad lifters with two positions, a sternum strap with a one-handed buckle, and a hip belt that tightens as you pull forwards.
- The framePermanently elastic spring steel: it keeps its shape under load, and the shoulder straps are anchored straight to it.
The right fit
Recommended for heights of 170 to 205 cm. Also available in the shorter SL fit. See the Futura Pro 34 SL
Within reach
Three pockets without stopping, and the poles wherever you want them.

In the rain
The downpour sets in: the cover goes over the pack.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
Water gets in eventually: anything that hates water goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads on the fabric, but gets through the seams and zips in steady rain.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
A cover supplied with the pack wraps all of it when the downpour sets in.
This bag
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
Once closed, the pack keeps its contents safe from rain and splashes (IPX4), not from immersion.
Without its cover, it won't get through a day of rain: keep the cover in the pack.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- The 36 keeps the mesh back and the rain cover of the 32, and adds just enough room for a night in a hut, without weighing more on your shoulders. It's the one we recommend if you're torn between day hikes and the weekend.
- Worth knowing
- Recommended load: 10 kg at most. With a tent and a stove, you'll soon go over it.
- Who it's for
- For big, loaded days out, with the occasional night in a hut.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.

Questions
Why 1,590 g for a 36-litre pack?
The weight is in the back system: a spring steel frame, a tensioned mesh, padded one-piece shoulder straps and hip belt. That's what holds the pack away from your back and puts the load on your hips. For a two-hour outing, a simpler pack will do.
Is the Futura Pro 36 waterproof?
It isn't waterproof, but its rain cover is included: in steady rain, water eventually gets in through a pack's seams and zips, hence the cover. Anything that has to stay dry also goes in a pouch.
Futura Pro 36 or Futura Pro 40?
Same back, same recommended height (170 to 205 cm), same rating of 3 out of 5 for trekking. The 40 takes 4 litres more for 30 g and 1 cm of height. The 36 if a night in a hut is the exception, the 40 if you link stages together.
How do I adjust the back length?
The VariClick slider at the centre of the pack moves through five positions, from S to L; a click tells you it's locked in. The pack is recommended for 170 to 205 cm; for a shorter back, the same family comes in an SL fit with the 34 SL.
What are the dimensions of the Futura Pro 36?
69 × 32 × 24 cm (height, width, depth, pack full), for 36 litres and 1,590 g empty. Recommended load: 6 to 10 kg.
