I. Early Days

Nicolas Vanier was born in Dakar, Senegal in 1962, the youngest of four siblings. From an early age, he was drawn to the outdoors and spent much of his childhood exploring the forests and fields near his home in Sologne, France. His love of nature was nurtured by his grand-father, avid nature enthusiast and instilled in him a deep appreciation for the beauty and wonders of the natural world. However, Nicolas had no history of adventuring in his family. His attraction for adventure, he described it himself as "an obviousness, an attraction, since always".

Vanier's parents were both well-educated and had a strong interest in history, literature, and the arts. They fostered this love of learning in their children and encouraged them to explore their interests and passions. For Vanier, this meant spending countless hours outside, observing and studying the animals and plants he encountered. He became an avid reader, devouring books about wildlife and adventure, diving into the adventures of Jack London, Paul-Émile Victor or Ernest Shackleton and dreamed of one day embarking on his own epic journeys.

As he grew older, Vanier's interest in nature and adventure only deepened. He was an active and athletic child, and enjoyed participating in a variety of outdoor sports and activities. He was also an avid scout, and spent many happy hours exploring the countryside with his friends. These early experiences in the outdoors had a profound impact on his later career, and he credits his parents with instilling in him a deep love and respect for nature.

At 17, he decided to take a train from Paris to the last station beyond the Arctic Circle, in Kiruna, Lapland. He then set out to discover the Great North that he so coveted, to meet reindeer herders. He continued his immersion in native cultures the following summer by traveling to Canada, where the Indians built him a canoe to cross the peninsula of New Labrador.

Overall, Vanier's background and childhood were marked by a deep love of nature and a strong desire to explore the world, especially the "Great North". These passions would shape the course of his later career and lead him on some of the most exciting and rewarding adventures of his life.

He first crossed Lapland on foot in 1982, then the Great North of Quebec in a kayak in 1983 before switching to dog sleds for his crossing of New-Quebec Labrador. Vanier then tackled the Rockies and Alaska in 1986-87 before changing continents and undertaking a long odyssey in 1990-91, crossing Siberia, from Mongolia to the Arctic Ocean, over 7000 km. He repeated this effort a few years later, this time over 8600 km during the "White Odyssey", crossing the North American continent with sled dogs, from Alaska to Quebec in less than 100 days.

10 years later, in 2005-2006, still guided by the call of adventure, he undertook the "Siberian Odyssey" and its 8000 km across Siberia, from Irkutsk to Moscow with his team of 10 dogs. It will take him 4 months to complete his journey. Finally, almost a decade later, in 2013-2014, he embarked once again on a long crossing by sled from eastern Siberia to Lake Baikal, his previous starting point.
