Camera Backpacks — Vintage Canvas & Leather Camera Bags

Vintage-style backpacks built around a removable camera insert — waxed cotton canvas, crazy horse leather trims, solid brass hardware. Pull the padded dividers out and you have a regular daypack with a laptop sleeve. Leave them in and the bag swallows a body, two or three lenses, batteries, and a 15" laptop. Every Eiken camera backpack is named after a national park or mountain range, and every model is designed to work both ways.

The canvas is heavy-duty cotton, waxed on several models for extra water resistance. The leather is full-grain crazy horse cowhide. The hardware is solid brass, not plated. Weights run from 0.8 kg (FUJI sling) to 1.9 kg (JOTUNHEIMEN) — light for a canvas-and-leather camera bag, where the trade-off is usually weight for durability.

Most popular: HALIBURTON — 20L, the best all-rounder for one body + two lenses | JOTUNHEIMEN — 28L, the largest model for heavy setups | FUJI — sling bag for mirrorless shooters who travel light

    What Fits Inside

Every backpack in this collection (except the FUJI sling) has a padded camera compartment with removable velcro dividers. A typical setup: one DSLR or mirrorless body, two to three lenses, a flash or battery pack, and a handful of SD cards and cables — with a separate padded laptop sleeve behind it all. The larger models (JOTUNHEIMEN at 28L, KILIMANDJARO at 26L, SERENGETI at 24.5L) can handle a pro body with a 70-200mm attached, plus two additional lenses and a 15" laptop.

Remove the inserts entirely and you have a standard canvas backpack — useful when you're not shooting but still want the bag with you.

Canvas vs Leather — Which Camera Bag?

Most models in this collection are primarily waxed cotton canvas with crazy horse leather accents (straps, flap, base reinforcement). Two models lean more heavily into leather: the DENALI has a full leather exterior, and the SERENGETI uses more leather paneling than the rest.

Canvas is lighter and more water-resistant out of the box — better for hiking and outdoor photography. Leather adds structure and develops a patina over time — better if you want a vintage camera bag that looks sharper with age. Both protect your gear equally well; the choice is aesthetic.

    For Hiking and Outdoor Photography

The YELLOWSTONE and ALGONQUIN use waxed canvas for better water resistance — they'll handle drizzle and damp trails without a rain cover. Both have padded shoulder straps with a sternum strap and breathable back panels. The YELLOWSTONE is the larger of the two at 25L. For day hikes where you want the lightest option, the SEQUOIA weighs just 1.2 kg with 25L of capacity.

    For Street and Travel Photography

The HALIBURTON (20L, 1.3 kg) is the sweet spot — big enough for a body, two lenses, and a laptop, compact enough to not draw attention on the street. The FUJI sling (15L, 0.8 kg) is the lightest option for mirrorless shooters who carry one body and one lens — swing it to the front, grab the camera, swing it back. For international travel, models at 25L and under fit standard carry-on dimensions on most airlines.

    Care

Canvas: brush off dirt, spot clean with damp cloth, re-wax yearly if needed (waxing guide). Leather trims: wipe with a dry cloth, condition every few months (leather care guide). Store stuffed with paper in a breathable bag — never plastic.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What camera gear fits in these backpacks?

A typical load: one DSLR or mirrorless body, two to three lenses, batteries, SD cards, and a 15" laptop. The larger models (JOTUNHEIMEN, KILIMANDJARO) can fit a pro body with a 70-200mm attached. The padded dividers are removable and repositionable — you configure the layout to match your kit.

Can I use these as a regular backpack?

Yes. Pull the camera inserts out and you have a standard canvas backpack with a laptop sleeve. Every model is designed to work both ways.

    Are the backpacks waterproof?

Water-resistant, not waterproof. The waxed canvas models (YELLOWSTONE, ALGONQUIN) offer the best rain protection. All models handle light rain and splashes, but for heavy sustained rain, use a rain cover. Your camera gear deserves the extra precaution.

What's the difference between a vintage camera bag and a regular camera backpack?

Most camera backpacks on the market are black nylon — functional but anonymous. Eiken camera backpacks use waxed cotton canvas and crazy horse leather instead, which means they read as vintage daypacks that happen to carry camera gear. They won't scream "expensive equipment inside" on the street, and the materials age into character rather than wearing down.

Which model is best for mirrorless cameras?

Mirrorless setups are lighter and more compact, so you don't need the largest bag. The FUJI sling (15L) is ideal for one body and one lens. The DENALI (17.5L) and HALIBURTON (20L) give you room for an extra lens or two without the bulk of the larger models.

Do these fit as airline carry-on?

Models at 25L and under (YELLOWSTONE, SEQUOIA, VILNIUS, HALIBURTON, ALGONQUIN, FUJI, DENALI, KRUGER, GALAPAGOS, SERENGETI) fit standard international carry-on dimensions on most airlines. The two largest models — JOTUNHEIMEN (28L) and KILIMANDJARO (26L) — exceed the strictest low-cost carry-on rules and may need to go under the seat or be checked depending on the airline.

    What warranty do you offer?

    ★★★★★

Having recently bought several other backpacks, I purchased this camera backpack for my daughter. The quality is first class. The camera insert design works extremely well and allows her to put her camera in the pack for hikes and remove the insert with the camera when she uses the pack for college. The leather flap top is very flexible and easier to access than my canvas flap top backpack. She loves the complete design.

Fits all my camera needs perfectly. It looks gorgeous and not like a camera bag at all. Very comfortable, but the straps keep getting loose.

I bought the Algonquin Backpack to be able to explore a bit this summer and be able to take some shoots. I wanted a sturdy & functional backpack to carry my canon but I wantd it stylish as many of the camera bag nowadays are boring and generic. I'm more than happy with the style and the features. The leather is awesome, the waxed canvas fabric is very stiff and easy to wash. I already went through hell with my backpack and it protected my belongings perfectly. Thanks guys !

I love it - it’s so versatile and all of my camera kit fits with plenty more space for other essentials! Perfectly secure with the back fasteners - even handier than one which opens in the normal way. I’m super pleased with this purchase.

I wanted a canvas and leather cool looking not to big camera bag and a rucksack version. I needed one that could hold one camera, a lens and tripod. This bag fit the bill. Looks awesome and is so well made. It really is perfect.
