Db Journey Backcountry Backpack 25L - Off-Piste Ski and Snowboard Backpack (1.35 kg)

The top chair drops you at the edge of the ski area, and your line sits twenty minutes higher, up a ridge you climb on foot. Board or skis go onto the pack, the straps cinch, and you kick steps with both hands free. That climb is what the Db Journey Backcountry Backpack 25L was drawn for: Db's off-piste pack, for skis or a snowboard.

Its carry systems stay hidden until you need them. The ski and board straps tuck away once the skis are back on your feet, the ice-axe carry has a tool-tip sleeve so the tip stays sheathed, and a back-access flap opens the main compartment without undoing the A-frame or taking the board off.

The shell is recycled high-tenacity nylon woven in a mega ripstop, 100% recycled polyamide, over a recycled polyester lining dyed in the fibre. This off-piste backpack weighs 1.35 kg for 55 x 32 x 14.5 cm, cut slim enough to stay on your back on the chairlift, with a padded, removable hip belt that locks the load down on the descent.

Who is it for?

Freeriders, snowboarders and splitboarders who use the lifts to gain height, then walk for their lines with a full avalanche kit and skis or a board strapped to the pack. If your days mix the top chair and a bootpack, and end with the skis on your back as often as under your feet, this is the volume and the kit for it.

Built Around the Transitions

An off-piste pack earns its keep in the transitions: board or skis onto the back, a layer on at the top, skis back on your feet for the descent. These six details shorten them.

  • ✔️ Tuckable ski and board carry: straps deploy for skis in an A-frame or a snowboard, and disappear on the way down.
  • ✔️ Back-access flap: reach the main compartment from the back panel without dismantling the A-frame or removing the board.
  • ✔️ Ice-axe carry with tool-tip sleeves: the axe rides outside with its tip sheathed, clear of your jacket.
  • ✔️ Internal avalanche compartment: shovel and probe kept apart from the layers, ready when the day turns serious.
  • ✔️ Bladder sleeve with rear port: your hydration bladder slides in against the back, the hose exits at the rear towards the strap.
  • ✔️ Radio pocket and goggle pocket: an internal zipped mesh pocket for the radio, a ventilated one for the goggles.

Up front, the vertical zip pocket hides a deployable mesh helmet carry for the climb. Db gave the pack a lift-friendly, slim-fit cut, so it stays on your back from the chair to the bootpack, and the straps are Hook-Up System compatible, so the pack can ride on a Db roller bag.

Who This Pack Is For

The Backcountry 25L is for people who ride beyond the ropes, use the lifts when they help and their legs when they stop, carry the full avalanche kit as a habit, and want a pack that handles the skis-on-the-back hours as well as the descent.

  • You ski beyond the ropes and bootpack the last section to your line with the skis strapped in an A-frame.
  • You splitboard or hike for lines and need a snowboard backpack whose straps vanish once the board is back on your feet.
  • You carry an ice axe on spring couloirs and want its tip sheathed on the pack.
  • You drink on the move and would rather sip from a hose than stop to dig out a bottle.
  • You ski with a group and keep a radio within reach in its own zipped pocket.

At 1.35 kg, this is a sturdy pack rather than a race-light one: the grams go into the carry systems, the back access and the ripstop. If you count every gram, the Klättermusen Gyme Backpack 25L weighs 950 g.

For more technical ski touring, with a rope and a roll-top, look at the Snow Pro Backpack 25L; for resort days and the office on Monday, the Backcountry Backpack 20L. At the top of the ridge, the board comes off the pack, the straps tuck away, and nothing flaps on the way down.

FAQ

+

Yes. Db fitted it with deployable carry straps for skis or a board, and photographs it with a pair of skis strapped in an A-frame. When the skis go back on your feet, the straps tuck away instead of flapping around on the descent.

+

Db calls it "Backcess": a flap at the back of the main compartment that lets you reach your gear without dismantling the A-frame or removing the board. Lay the pack face down in the snow, open the back, take out the jacket or the thermos, close it again. The skis never move.

+

For a day, yes; a night in a hut or a rope and a harness call for more. The shovel and probe go in the internal avalanche compartment, water in the bladder sleeve, and the main compartment takes skins, a warm layer, food and spare gloves. Helmet and ice axe ride outside, which keeps the inside for what you reach for at the top.

+

Same volume, 50 g apart (1.35 kg against 1.4 kg). The Snow Pro 25L adds the Rib Cage frame, a roll-top and a rope carry, for more technical ski touring days. The Backcountry 25L stays the off-piste pack, for skis or a board: tuckable straps, a slim cut for the chairlift, a bladder sleeve and a radio pocket.

+

Db does not list laptop compatibility for the 25L, so we do not promise one. This is a mountain pack first. If the same bag has to go to work during the week, the Backcountry Backpack 20L is rated by Db for a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

+

The 25L (1.35 kg, 14.5 cm deep) is the off-piste version for skis or a board on your back: tuckable straps, an ice-axe carry, the back-access flap, a bladder sleeve with rear port and a radio pocket. The 20L (1.05 kg, 12 cm deep) is the lift-served and everyday version, with room for a 16-inch laptop. Choose by how far you walk for your turns.

+

Empty it after each outing, take the bladder out and let it and the pack dry open at room temperature, away from a radiator. Wipe the ripstop with lukewarm water and a mild soap on a soft cloth; we advise against the washing machine and the dryer. Check the tool-tip sleeves for grit, and rinse the zips with fresh water after a spring day in slush.
