Db Journey Backcountry Backpack 20L - Ski Backpack for Off-Piste From the Lift (1.05 kg)
The chair swings in behind your knees, the bar comes down, and the pack stays where it is, on your back, cut narrow enough to ride up that way. From the top station it is a short skate past the last piste marker to the line you picked out on the way up. That stretch is where the Db Journey Backcountry Backpack 20L does its work.
The avalanche kit gets a dedicated compartment of its own, opened from the front panel: probe, shovel and snow saw stand apart from your spare layer, and a drainage hole lets melted snow escape instead of freezing in the pack. The vertical front zip hides a mesh helmet carry that unfolds when the helmet comes off for lunch and folds away again after.
The shell is woven from recycled high-tenacity nylon in a mega ripstop grid, 100% recycled polyamide, over a recycled polyester lining dyed in the fibre. The whole ski backpack weighs 1.05 kg for 50.5 x 28 x 12 cm, and the padded hip belt comes off once the day moves from the mountain to the street.
Who is it for?
Skiers and snowboarders who buy a lift pass and still carry a shovel and probe, because the best snow sits a few minutes outside the ropes. And anyone who wants that same bag to carry a 16-inch laptop through the rest of the week, when the only descent is the stairs to the metro.
Twenty Litres for a Lift-Served Off-Piste Day
It is a small volume, so Db spent the space on what a lift-served off-piste day asks for, and left the rest out. Six details carry the weight here.
- ✔️ Lift-friendly slim cut: 12 cm deep and narrow through the body, so the ski backpack rides the chair on your back.
- ✔️ Front-opening avalanche compartment: probe, shovel and snow saw in their own space, with a drainage hole against ice build-up.
- ✔️ Deployable helmet carry: a mesh net stowed in the vertical front pocket, out when the helmet comes off.
- ✔️ Ventilated goggle pocket: a mesh interior pocket that keeps the goggles apart from the shovel blade.
- ✔️ Removable padded hip belt: on to steady the load in the trees, off for the walk into town.
- ✔️ Laptop and hydration ready: takes up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro, and takes a hydration bladder on the mountain.
The straps are Hook-Up System compatible: on the way to the mountain, the pack rides on a Db roller bag, which Db sums up as taking weight off your shoulders and keeping one hand free for coffee. On a bluebird morning at the bottom of the lift queue, that is a fair description of the job.
Who This Pack Is For
The Backcountry 20L is for people whose winter runs on lift passes and short hikes, who ski what the lifts reach and a little beyond, and who want one bag that makes sense on Saturday and on Monday.
- You ski off-piste from the lifts and want your shovel and probe in their own compartment, never under your sandwich.
- You ride a snowboard and want a pack slim enough to stay on through the chair and the gondola.
- You spend the season in a ski town and need the same bag to carry a 16-inch laptop to the café.
- You commute through winter and want a ripstop shell tough enough for bike racks and crowded trains.
- You pack light and prefer twenty well-organised litres to a big bag you never fill.
Db lists no ice-axe carry and no ski or board straps on this model; its photos show skis fixed in an A-frame with the side straps, enough to get you through a short bootpack.
For long walks with skis on your back, the Backcountry Backpack 25L adds dedicated ski and board straps, an ice-axe carry and back access. For steeper objectives, the roll-top Snow Pro Backpack 25L goes further. The rest of the Db Journey range covers travel and the city; the 20L is the one that stays on your back from first chair to last.

FAQ
For a lift-served day, yes. Twenty litres takes the shovel, probe and snow saw in their internal compartment, plus a spare layer, water, food and goggles. For a full day on foot with skins, a helmet and more layers, the Backcountry 25L is the better size.
That is the point of the lift-friendly, slim-fit design. Any pack thickens when it is stuffed to bursting, but at 28 cm wide and 12 cm deep, this one sits close to your back instead of pushing you forward on the chair.
Skis, for a short walk: Db photographs the 20L with a pair strapped in an A-frame using the side straps. But Db lists no dedicated ski or board straps, no ice-axe carry and no back access on this model. If you regularly bootpack with your skis or board on your back, the Backcountry Backpack 25L has all three.
Yes. Db states that the Backcountry 20L holds up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro. That is what turns this ski backpack into a weekday bag: the avalanche tools come out on Sunday night, the laptop goes in on Monday morning.
In its dedicated avalanche compartment, opened from the front panel and sized for a probe, a shovel, a snow saw and glacier tools. It keeps the metal away from your spare layers, and a drainage hole lets melted snow escape instead of freezing at the bottom of the pack. Your transceiver stays on your body, as always.
The 20L (1.05 kg, 12 cm deep) is the lift-served and everyday version, with room for a 16-inch laptop. The 25L (1.35 kg, 14.5 cm deep) is the off-piste version for skis or a board on your back: tuckable straps, an ice-axe carry, a back-access flap and a bladder sleeve with rear port. Pick by how often your skis ride on your back.
After a day out, empty it, open the avalanche compartment and let everything dry at room temperature, away from a radiator. Wipe the ripstop with lukewarm water and a mild soap on a soft cloth; we advise against the washing machine and the dryer. After a slushy spring day, rinse the zips with fresh water so they keep running.
